Why Survata?

Survata is a San Francisco startup building the Brand Intelligence platform. We help clients like Microsoft, Clorox, Chipotle, and Bayer measure consumer sentiment at every touchpoint on the customer journey. Our technology allows clients to interview consumers based on specific online & offline actions. We leverage the scale of the web to drastically increase our consumer reach. Beyond simply providing the data, our platform enables clients to analyze and visualize their data to provide actionable insights.

We are backed by leading investors (Y Combinator, Uncork Capital, Bloomberg Beta, Ridge Ventures, PivotNorth, and leading MarTech CEOs) but are a small team where you can make a big impact. We like to move quickly, invest behind the curve, look at the data, and learn the real story behind our cocktails at educational Friday happy hours.

Senior Backend Software Engineer

We’re bringing market research into the modern world. We use techniques from distributed systems to categorical statistics to machine learning to data visualization to deliver valuable insights to our clients. Our data pipeline scales into the billions with a serverless architecture to allow our clients to do research based on online actions.

You’ll help set up our systems for the growth to come. No matter the project, you’ll jump in with both feet, architecting it just enough to deliver in the short term and set us up for the long term. You’ll focus on our distributed systems and data pipeline.

About You

  • You get excited about billions of events and terabytes of data
  • You’ve built big systems that drive a business
  • Distributed systems idempotence excites you
  • You understand that your software runs on computers (but you architect things so you spend the minimum amount of time possible thinking about that)
  • You’ve used a lot of AWS services. You love some, are frustrated by others, and can’t wait to try the next one
  • You either have experience with the likes of Spark, EMR, and Hadoop, or you’ve read a ton about them and are dying to get your hands dirty
  • You thrive on the energy of operating in a fast-paced, ever-changing startup atmosphere

To apply, send a resume or LinkedIn profile to jobs@survata.com.

Data Engineer

Survata is a venture-funded startup that helps the world’s biggest brands make better business decisions. We measure consumer sentiment in real time by conducting online surveys through a network of publishers and mobile apps. Our Data Engineers build tools to unlock the full value of our data by building tools to deliver useful, actionable insights to our Fortune 100 clients.

You’ll work on and learn from (and hopefully teach!) a team that includes highly-accomplished statisticians and Python programmers who’ve contributed to popular open source packages like Django.

In this role, you’ll be expected to involve yourself in and improve the whole data lifecycle from the way surveys are created to the way statistical analysis is performed and presented. You’ll design and develop pipelines to make our analytical process more automated and more powerful. You’ll anticipate, investigate, and prevent any threats to the integrity of our data and results. You’ll think hard about testing and devise ways to keep our pipelines both flexible and correct. You’ll work directly with our data scientists to research, prototype, and implement new statistical methodologies that extend the repertoire of insights we can provide to our clients. You’ll build API’s using frameworks like Falcon to make data immediately available to other systems, and build pipelines using tools like AWS Batch to perform Causal and Statistical Inference on survey data. And you’ll work deeply with (and occasionally even extend) the core toolkit of the PyData ecosystem (i.e. NumPy, SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn etc.)

You should apply if you’re the type of person who’s genuinely interested in and excited about data. It’s not enough to throw data into a pipe and get plausible numbers out — you need to care whether the answers our system provides are actually true, and you shouldn’t rest until you feel fully confident that you can stand behind our results.

No matter your experience, we look for candidates who are curious, high in integrity, and eager to do valuable work and grow as a developer.

At many companies, data is used internally to optimize internal business processes. At Survata, data and analysis is our product. It’s the core reason clients come to us, and that means that data engineering is at the very heart of our business.

The tools you build will truly be crucial for Survata’s success.

About You

  • You’re curious. You care about understanding the world around you and want to learn more about why it works the way it does. It bothers you deeply when the data in front of you doesn’t make sense
  • You like math (though you don’t need to be trained in it). The work involves statistics, but your statistical instinct matters more than your statistical knowledge. You’ll learn the specific statistical techniques we use on the job, but you’ll need to come in with a great feel for data and a desire and willingness to learn the mathematical underpinnings of our Statistical and Causal Inference methodology
  • You like solving real-world business problems. Our clients use our data to make their businesses more effective, and you’ll use your skills to make Survata more effective at satisfying our clients. You should be motivated by turning theoretical ideas into concrete tools and improvements
  • You have at least some experience managing large, dense datasets. You’re always looking for better tools to make data easier to work with
  • You’re careful, meticulous and diligent. You know that broken or incorrect data is worse than useless, and you’re disposed and equipped to build systems that are consistently reliable
  • You have experience at and enjoy working with tabular data in R or Python or both. Most of your work will be done in Python using the pandas framework, so you’ll need to be comfortable doing lots of Python (or at least excited to learn)
  • You understand SQL and relational databases and are comfortable using them
  • Communication is a vital lifeline for you — you know that participating effectively in a team takes deliberate effort and you appreciate and want the value that comes from being part of collaborative and inclusive team
  • You’re comfortable working on multiple long and short-term projects simultaneously. You are motivated to take initiate and drive projects to completion
  • You believe that well-structured code, rigorous testing, and solid engineering methodology are a must. We work with a wide variety of ever-changing data and so your code must be well built to work in all cases
  • You enjoy being a valued member of a well-oiled team. Survata believes in fostering a welcoming, inclusive climate where people feel safe and supported and actually want to work with each other
  • You’re the type who fixes problems instead of worrying about who’s responsible for fixing them. You own and take responsibility for your actions and you want to stake out a meaningful area of expertise within the constant swirl and change of startup life

About You

  • Material experience working with PyData tools such as pandas, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, statsmodels
  • A degree or equivalent experience in mathematics, computer science, or statistics
  • Experience working with “big data” ecosystem tools e.g. Redshift, Kinesis, Cassandra
  • Experience working with Groovy or Java
  • Experience with marketing technology, advertising technology, or market research companies
